According to Canadian researchers at McGill University, lightning strikes aircraft on average about once a year. However, aircraft are designed to withstand such strikes. Meanwhile, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, lightning can cause damage but has never caused a plane to crash.
The Boeing 777, commonly referred to as the Triple Seven, is a long-range wide-body American commercial airplane developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. The 777 is the world’s largest twin-engine jet and the most built wide-body commercial airplane.
